Life Is Fine

I went down to the river,
I set down on the bank.
I tried to think but couldn’t,
So I jumped in and sank.

I came up once and hollered!
I came up twice and cried!
If that water hadn’t a-been so cold
I might’ve sunk and died.

But it was Cold in that water! It was cold!

I took the elevator
Sixteen floors above the ground.
I thought about my baby
And thought I would jump down.

I stood there and I hollered!
I stood there and I cried!
If it hadn’t a-been so high
I might’ve jumped and died.

But it was High up there! It was high!

So since I’m still here livin’,
I guess I will live on.
I could’ve died for love–
But for livin’ I was born

Though you may hear me holler,
And you may see me cry–
I’ll be dogged, sweet baby,
If you gonna see me die-

Life is fine! Fine as wine! Life is fine!

ENOUGHHHHHHHH !

May ….

By Sara Teasedale

May

The wind is tossing the lilacs,
The new leaves laugh in the sun,
And the petals fall on the orchard wall,
But for me the spring is done.

Beneath the apple blossoms
I go a wintry way,
For love that smiled in April
Is false to me in May.

Another Shattered Dream….

Roll-Call

“CORPORAL GREEN!” the Orderly cried;
“Here!” was the answer loud and clear,
From the lips of a soldier who stood near,—
And “Here!” was the word the next replied.

“Cyrus Drew!”—then a silence fell;
This time no answer followed the call;
Only his rear-man had seen him fall:
Killed or wounded—he could not tell.

There they stood in the failing light,
These men of battle, with grave, dark looks,
As plain to be read as open books,
While slowly gathered the shades of night.

The fern on the hillsides was splashed with blood,
And down in the corn, where the poppies grew,
Were redder stains than the poppies knew,
And crimson-dyed was the river’s flood.

For the foe had crossed from the other side,
That day, in the face of a murderous fire
That swept them down in its terrible ire;
And their life-blood went to color the tide.

“Herbert Cline!”—At the call there came
Two stalwart soldiers into the line,
Bearing between them this Herbert Cline,
Wounded and bleeding, to answer his name.

“Ezra Kerr!”—and a voice answered “Here!”
“Hiram Kerr!”—but no man replied.
They were brothers, these two; the sad wind sighed,
And a shudder crept through the cornfield near.

“Ephraim Deane!”—then a soldier spoke:
“Deane carried our regiment’s colors,” he said,
“When our ensign was shot; I left him dead
Just after the enemy wavered and broke.

“Close to the roadside his body lies;
I paused a moment and gave him to drink;
He murmured his mother’s name, I think,
And Death came with it and closed his eyes.”

’T was a victory,—yes; but it cost us dear:
For that company’s roll, when called at night,
Of a hundred men who went into the fight,
Numbered but twenty that answered “Here!”

Rose and Root :-)

Rose and Root

A Fable of Two Lives

THE ROSE aloft in sunny air,
Beloved alike by bird and bee,
Takes for the dark Root little care
That toils below it ceaselessly.

I put my question to the flower:
“Pride of the Summer, garden queen,
Why livest thou thy little hour?”
And the Rose answered, “I am seen.”

I put my question to the Root.
“I mine the earth content,” it said,
“A hidden miner underfoot:
I know a Rose is overhead.”
